In my psychology class today we discussed the issue of stigma surrounding mental issues and emotions, especially for men. Thought I’d share this clip we watched. It’s from the movie Good Will Hunting (yeah if you don’t like the movie or actors or whatever just keep scrolling blah blah blah) But I just thought it did a good job of showing how guys have to cover up their emotions and sort of brush it off for others, and how difficult but necessary it is to overcome some of that. I’m not a male so I can’t exactly speak on their behalf when it comes directly to this issue, but I do think that we as a society need to be more accepting and acknowledging of ALL people’s emotions, instead of trying to downplay it for certain groups. Emotions don’t make you weak, stupid, or irrational. They just make you human.
It’s a good viewpoint to have. I’ve heard most who go into psychology come out of school with an idea that men are the problem of society and women need all the protection they get. This affects men greatly as they don’t get the representation they need in society. I hope what I heard is wrong, but wouldn’t be surprised if it is true.
As men, we are expendable to the needs of society, and being anything more than a mule or a bullseye is wasted energy. We are taught that we shouldn’t display our emotions, that it is not sexy. If we are not the top dog alpha males, then the chances of having happiness diminishes. Lacking that, you must have money, so people can pretend to be your friends. Being yourself is a joke.
I choose to be myself and it has brought me no happiness. I do it because I have respect for myself, which is a quality that men are told to have but encouraged to ignore.
Not to say that non-alpha males don’t find happiness, but it is difficult to do. It requires us to play stupid games just to get attention. The same games girls claim they don’t want and sick of guys doing and yet continue to participate in.
I recognize that women have it tough in life. Our society insists though that because women have it tough, nothing else can compare and men have nothing to complain about. Then the problems of men disappear, and if we try to bring them up, we are accused of being misogynist crybabies. Or that we are lying. Which is another form of pressure for us not to have emotions.
In society, men are not allowed to be who they want. They are required to be what society needs them to be.

What has feminism actually done in the past 10 years? This is a legitimate question, and it would be great if someone could answer.

Do you know what year it is??? Do you know what year women got the right to vote???? Cuz honey I can tell you right now it wasn’t in the year 2004
One of the best videos I’ve seen on this.
He’s the reason why I live sometimes
I literally had no idea this kind of stuff was happening on youtube at such a grand level. I’ve read racist comments and have seen questionable videos before but I never thought that it was so entrenched in not only the fans but also the youtubbers themselves. This is some very scary shit
I love youuuuuuuuuuuuuuu
This is a really good video, especially the part about not making excuses. Like he said, rape is a conscious decision, not a “mistake”. Sexual abuse is unacceptable, no matter who you are.
